# Metadata for Jianfengling_CHINAROOTS_TissueNutrients.csv # Author & Data Collector: J. Aaron Hogan (jamesaaronhogan@gmail.com) # 6-17-2019 # Description: Data are concentrations of elements in root and leaf tissues for 300 tropical saplings from Jianfengling, Hainan Island, China. Sampling took place during the summer (May-July) of 2017. Entire root systems (containing 3-4 root orders) were excavated from lateral surface roots and leaves were collected from juvenile trees along a 6.6 km transect spanning secondary and primary forest. Plant organs were dried until constant mass at 65 deg C. Dried organs were homogenized in a beadmill (Fisher Beadmaster 24). Samples were micro-weighed (1-2 mg) for gas chromatography elemental analysis measurement of carbon and nitrogen on a Thermo Delta Plus GC-IRMS at the Florida International University stable isotope lab. The remainder of the ground tissues were sent to the Louisiana State University Ag Lab (see http://stpal.lsu.edu), for quantification of Aluminum, Boron, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sulfur, and Zinc using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. * Data were measured in percent (%) or parts per million (ppm) elemental concentrations per tissue dry weight. # Variable descriptions: Sample - Jianfengling collection number Family - plant family Gen.sp - plant species (in the form Genus_species) type - organ type, either root or leaf. forest - forest type where the plant was sampled on the transect (either secondary or primary) Nitrogen % - percent Nitrogen in plant organ tissue.
