Solid circles and solid lines are the diameters of roots known to be first and second order scanned with WinRhizo (0–30-cm soil cores in each plot; 2, 3, or 6 plots per species; n = 5000–90000 root tips). Open circles and dashed lines are for all roots seen in minirhizotron windows from 1999–2002 (8, 9, or 18 tubes per species; n = 400–2800 roots). Maximum diameter used as a cut-off to indicate mostly first-order roots in the minirhizotron samples are noted below the species names.
